***** “the [featured] cantatas by Haydn, Handel and Alessandro Scarlatti [are] a marvellous vehicle for Lindsey’s dramatic gifts and chameleon skill in changing colours as these emotional rollercoasters sweep on. Ranging between melting tenderness and boiling rage, Scarlatti’s ‘L’Arianna’ particularly impresses, with extra drama on hand from Jonathan Cohen’s instrumental ensemble Arcangelo.” – The Times

Arcangelo and Jonathan Cohen join star US mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey for three contrastingly abandoned cantatas celebrating the mythical figure of Arianna-Ariadne. Haydn’s ‘Arianna a Naxos’ is presented in the rarely-heard orchestration by Haydn’s pupil Sigismund Neukomm while Alessandro Scarlatti’s intimate chamber cantata is revealed as a work of power beyond its dimensions. Handel’s cantata, likewise, overboils with music that the composer was compelled to re-use in his subsequent opera ‘Agrippina’.
