Arcangelo is delighted to announce that renowned French soprano Sandrine Piau will head its cast of singers and instrumentalists for the group’s major performance and recording project of 2019, Handel’s ‘Brockes Passion’. Piau joins the English tenor Stuart Jackson (Evangelist) and German baritone Konstantin Krimmel (Christus) for the project, with the work’s remaining arias and choruses to be sung by a hand-picked vocal consort.
Described by Handel expert Dr Ruth Smith as demonstrating “all of [Handel’s] power of dramatising immediacy and human sympathy”, the Brockes Passion sets a remarkable libretto by the Hamburg poet, journalist and senator Barthold Heinrich Brockes. Mixing soulful theological meditations with gruesome descriptions of Christ’s mutilated body, the libretto inspired a multitude of settings by leading German composers of the period, and influenced J.S.Bach’s subsequent ‘St John Passion’.
Arcangelo’s studio recording of the work will be made in October 2019, directly following concert performances at Tetbury Festival and Wigmore Hall. The recording session is being funded by a consortium of donors, who have so far raised more than £35,000 of the £50,000 required. If you are interested in joining the consortium and making a donation towards Arcangelo’s unique interpretation of this ‘haunting, expressive masterpiece’, please email Arcangelo General Manager Julian Forbes: firstname.lastname@example.org
