About this programme

Heinrich Schütz’s opulent musical nativity play, premiered in Dresden in 1660, was composed for the full resources of the Elector of Saxony’s 50-strong musical establishment. Written towards the end of the composer’s life, the ‘Christmas Story’ abounds with the full range of stylistic influences that Schütz had absorbed over his long career, most notably in the Italianate recitatives for the Evangelist which Schütz himself proudly declared to be an innovation for German music of the period, and which offer important models for the later developments of Bach. The rest of the programme explores the development of Schütz’s dramatic vocal style through a sequence of festive works for voices and instruments, alongside an attractive selection of contemporary instrumental dances and sonatas.
