Arcangelo: Season 2022-23

Our 2022-23 season is a veritable constellation of bright prospects with a particularly sparkly cluster around our concerts and recording of Handel’s ‘Theodora’. We also present a brand-new programme exploring Baroque Rome with soprano and former BBC New Generation Artist Katharina Konradi, complete our GRAMMY-nominated survey of Dietrich Buxtehude’s chamber music, and take a journey to the “Lost English Versailles”. And we are delighted to present our first-ever co-production: Bach’s St John Passion with Finnish Baroque Orchestra and an outstanding European cast of soloists.

New-look Friends Scheme & Events Programme

The new season also sees a relaunch of our Friends Scheme, with new entry and top support levels, and revised benefits including a year-round Events Programme. We are particularly excited about the Events Programme which offers numerous opportunities for Friends to get closer to our projects and music-making.

Certain Events Programme events and activities are reserved to particular levels of the Friends Scheme, and in some cases carry additional charges. Details can be found below, and will be updated on Arcangelo’s website from July.

Friends Scheme donations or renewals do not need to be received before attending Events Programme events and activities. Put another way, you are welcome to sign up for and attend an event in October and make your donation or renewal the following March.

To help us with our planning, we are this year for the first time inviting Friends to indicate their chosen level of support for the coming year with a non-binding pledge. To pledge your support, just click/tap the button below to be taken to our secure online form, which will only take you a minute to complete.

Buxtehude: ‘Opus Posthumous’

Intricate, playful, odd – quintessentially baroque – Buxtehude’s trio sonatas have found ideal champions in Arcangelo whose two recordings to date earned plaudits including a GRAMMY nomination. In January 2023 we complete our survey of this marvellous music by recording chamber works unpublished during the composer’s lifetime.

Fundraising target: £10,000

Telemann: Paris Quartets

As a counterpart to our Buxtehude project, we will be creating Arcangelo’s first-ever full length film recording. Appropriately, we’ve chosen one of the great foundational works of modern chamber music from Telemann’s ‘Paris’ Quartets of the 1730s. Our filming location is the contemporary 18th century Wren Library at Trinity College Cambridge.

Fundraising required: £10,000

Handel: Chandos Anthems

Handel’s ‘Chandos Anthems’ are products of the remarkable and short-lived “English Versailles” that flourished at the Cannons Park stately home of James Brydges, Duke of Chandos. Written in a bravura Italianate style, these psalm settings represent the high watermark of English Baroque liturgical music – and are overdue the Arcangelo treatment!

Fundraising required: £30,000

Handel: Theodora

Arcangelo’s much-praised 2018 BBC Proms performance of Handel’s sublime late oratorio reignited interest in the work. Following repeat performances at the Vienna Konzerthaus (2020), Barbican Centre and DeSingel Antwerp (2022) we are delighted to make the first new studio recording of ‘Theodora’ in a quarter of a century, with a peerless cast led by Louise Alder.

Fundraising target: £10,000*

Boccherini: Cello Concerti Vol.II

Following a BBC Music Magazine Award for our recording of cello concerti by C.P.E. Bach, Arcangelo and Nicolas Altstaedt turn their attentions to the equally virtuosic concerti of Boccherini. These recording sessions in May 2023 will be for the second volume in the series, with the first volume recorded in 2021 and due for release in Spring 2023.

Fundraising target: £5,000*
