- The graduation of our second Arcangelo New Ensemblists cohort, and the selection and appointment of our third cohort from the largest-ever field of applicants;

News of our New Ensemblists
Leo Appel
Carmen Lavada Johnson-Pájaro
Martin Egidi
Francisco Javier Sánchez Castillo
Jaume Pueyo Solà
Since joining us in September, our five Arcangelo New Ensemblists (ANE) have taken part in the majority of Arcangelo’s activities. Highlights include our season launch at our new base on Trinity Buoy Wharf; European concert tours with Vilde Frang and Milos Karadaglic; repertoire workshops with Sophie Gent, Jonathan Manson, and Jonathan Cohen; and performances in the London Handel Festival, including a dedicated ANE chamber concert at the Foundling Museum.
We have also recently completed individual studio filming sessions in which the New Ensemblists have created individual portfolio films. These are in final post-production and will be revealed soon. In the meantime, we hope that Friends will enjoy watching our first 'video diary' of the third cohort, filmed during activities at Arcangelo's new base at Trinity Buoy Wharf in December.
Arcangelo new ensemblists at the London Handel Festival 2025: New Ensemblists (c) Ben Tomlin
Leo, Carmen, Martin, Javi, and Jaume spend a lot of time playing together on Arcangelo projects—but these are often intense and over in a flash. So, over the Christmas holidays, we thought it would be fun to test how well they really know each other with a light-hearted quiz of our own invention: "Guessbreakers". Over a series of video interviews carried out by Nathan, the ANE each tried to guess which of their fellow musicians had supplied which answer to a series of questions circulated in advance. The results are both entertaining and informative! Watch the videos below to find out more.
Handel 'Chandos' Anthems Vol. 1 - released 4 July 2025
We're delighted to announce that the next Arcangelo album on the Alpha Classics label will be our recording of four of Handel’s ‘Chandos’ Anthems, releasing on streaming, download and CD on 4 July. This recording offers a fresh perspective on some of Handel’s most unusual and striking music: the Italianate psalm cantatas he composed for the private chapel of the Duke of Chandos at Cannons in Middlesex.
For the first time (as far as we know), these remarkable works are performed with musical forces authentically scaled to match the household establishment for which they were originally written. This historically informed approach promises listeners an entirely new experience of music that is too often heard in oversized arrangements more suited to Handel’s later oratorios—forces that would have been physically impossible (and sonically overwhelming!) in the intimate setting of the Chandos chapel.
To celebrate the release, we have commissioned a little promotional video magic from our reliable wizard Andrew Staples, who has re-animated the ruined building featured on the Alpha Classics album cover artwork to the sounds of a suitably transcendent moment from the anthem "Let God Arise". Members Lounge readers get to watch this film a month ahead of its release - make sure to watch to the end to catch the 'special guest'.
Around the scenes at the London Handel Festival
This year saw Arcangelo being appointed Principal Ensemble in Residence at the Handel Festival, with three special performances led by our Artistic Director Jonathan Cohen. The residency opened in Handel’s own church, St George’s Hanover Square, with a powerful performance of L’Allegro, il Penseroso ed il Moderato. Our brilliant New Ensemblists gave a creative, self-devised concert at the Foundling Museum, and the residency concluded with soprano Emőke Baráth’s dazzling Festival debut in a recital of Handel arias with a chamber ensemble led by Zefira Valova. The various concerts were well documented by LHF photographers, and Arcangelo's own Nathan; we hope you enjoy this selection of their images.

Last concerts of the season
Arcangelo’s 2025 Summer Festivals programme brings together celebrated countertenor Iestyn Davies and rising star soprano Soraya Mafi for a musical love story “written by Handel”. This richly expressive programme traces an imaginary romantic encounter through a sequence of duets drawn from across Handel’s career—from his first Italian opera for London to his final English oratorios—reveling in the composer’s lifelong fascination with the human condition and the depths of human passion.
The tour marks the conclusion of our 2024–25 season and includes our debut at the Ryedale Festival in the UK, where tickets are now on general sale. We’ll also be performing the programme at summer festivals in Denmark and France—so if your holiday plans happen to align, we’d love to see you there!
