Arcangelo’s performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion with a glittering line-up soloists and a 70-strong ensemble will be broadcast on BBC Radio and TV

Arcangelo is delighted to announce that it will be appearing as part of the 2021 BBC Proms, announced today, with a full performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion at the Royal Albert Hall on Thursday 9 September. The performance will be led from the harpsichord by Arcangelo’s Artistic Director Jonathan Cohen and feature a 70-strong ensemble and soloists including tenor Stuart Jackson, whose superb Evangelist singing features on Arcangelo’s recording for Alpha Classics of Handel’s Brockes Passion, released earlier this year.

The performance will be performed to a live audience in the Royal Albert Hall, broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, and re-transmitted on 10 September on BBC Four Television. Tickets go on sale as part of the 2021 Proms ‘Booking Period 2’ on 17 July, with concert-goers encouraged to create an online ‘Proms Plan’ for their booking requests via the Proms website from 10 July.

Jonathan Cohen said: “I am delighted that Arcangelo can return to the Proms this year with such a remarkable piece of music. Our last Proms performance of Handel’s ‘Theodora’ in 2018 was on a similarly grand scale and it gives me the greatest pleasure that after these many difficult months we can reunite so many wonderful players and singers for a work that means so much to us and to audiences.”

Arcangelo General Manager Julian Forbes said: “We are deeply grateful to the BBC Proms team for their determination throughout the last months to keep planning for the best of all possible worlds. We are confident of a superb concert at the Royal Albert Hall, and excited to meet the audience once again.”
