Andrew Tortise was a choral scholar at Wells Cathedral and graduated from  Trinity        College, Cambridge in 2002. He studied singing first with Ashley Stafford and now with         Iris dell’Acqua. Concert plans this season and beyond include Telemaco in Monteverdi Il         ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, Arnalta L’incoronazione di Poppea and Acis in Handel Acis and         Galatea with Academy of Ancient Music and Richard Egarr; Monteverdi L’Orfeo and         Vespers at L’Opéra Royal de Versailles with The Monteverdi Choir and Sir John Eliot         Gardiner and Bach Magnificat with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Opera plans include         returning to the Royal Opera, Covent Garden to sing Simpleton in Mussorgsky Boris         Godunov with Antonio Pappano (also at the BBC Proms), Marzio in Mozart Mitridate        and Vogelgesang Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and to Dutch National Opera to sing         Lurcanio in Handel Ariodante. Recent highlights include The Spirit of the Masque in         Britten Gloriana for the Royal Opera, Covent Garden; Peter Quint The Turn of the Screw         for Lyon Opera; his debut at Theater an der Wien in a staged Bach Christmas Oratorio;         Novice Billy Budd and Janek The Makropulos Case for Dutch National Opera; David Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Ferrando Così fan tutte for Welsh National Opera and Lucano Poppea and the tenor arias in Bach St Matthew Passion for Glyndebourne Festival Opera. Early opera appearances included Marzio Mitridate at the Salzburg Festival; Ferrando and roles in L’incoronazione di Poppea for Lyon Opera; Mernier Frühlings Erwachen at La Monnaie, Brussels and Robert in David Sawyer Skin Deep for Opera North and at the Bregenz Festival. On the concert platform he has sung Beethoven Missa Solemnis with the CBSO and Choral Fantasy at the 2015 Edinburgh International Festival; Mozart Requiem with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the LSO and Sir Colin Davis and with the orchestra and chorus of WNO; Britten Les Illuminations with the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra and Ivor Bolton; Haydn Paukenmesse with the BBC SSO and Bernard Labardie; Monteverdi L’Orfeo on tour with Gardiner and Arnalta L’incoronazione di Poppea with AAM and Britten Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings with both the AAM and Aarhus Symphony Orchestra. Andrew’s regular Bach appearances include Mass in B Minor with the SCO and Richard Egarr; St Matthew Passion on a European tour with Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Mark Padmore; Evangelist St Matthew Passion in Lisbon; St Matthew Passion (arias) with the Residentie Orchestra and with the Gabrieli Consort and Players; Christmas Oratorio with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and Evangelist and arias in Bach St John Passion with Sir John Eliot Gardner. Andrew has also appeared with the Combattimento Consort, Amsterdam and Netherlands Bach Society and has given recitals at the Aldeburgh Festival with Malcolm Martineau and in Bruges with Richard Egarr.
