Nicolas Altstaedt and Arcangelo win a 2017 BBC Music Magazine Concerto Award!
Dear <<First Name>>,

We were thrilled to win a BBC Music Magazine Award tonight, for our album with Nicolas Altstaedt of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach cello concertos, on Hyperion Records, at a ceremony held at beautiful Kings Place in London. The Awards were based on voting by the public, and so we are all the more grateful that it comes from Nicolas’ and our followers and audience.

Artistic Director Jonathan Cohen says: “We are very honoured and delighted to receive this prestigious Award. We would like to thank Nicolas for his amazing cello playing, and for his original idea to record these pieces. We would also like to thank Simon Perry of Hyperion for his support of Arcangelo, and for the opportunities that he has given us over the years to record with Hyperion, which is a great honour.

An excerpt of the recording of the disc and some words from Nicolas can be watched .

Future concert dates; pre-concert drinks and an open rehearsal for our Followers
Our future UK concert dates are:

Friday 5 May at 10PM at Wigmore Hall, featuring exceptional talents Sophie Gent (violin), Thomas Dunford (lute), and Jonathan Manson (viola da gamba), together with Jonathan Cohen (harpsichord and direction), in a programme of 17th Century sonatas by composers including Buxtehude and Biber, where improvisation plays a part. Public booking is open, including £5 tickets for under 35s. If you are attending, please let us know so that we can include you and your companions on the guest list for our pre-concert drinks reception at 9:15PM. We are holding an open rehearsal of this programme for our Followers at 6:30-8:30PM on Saturday 29 April, in Shoreditch; please email us for further details. (photo: Sophie Gent, Thomas Dunford, and Jonathan Cohen in recording – photo credit: Simon Perry)

1 October at 5PM at Tetbury Music Festival in Gloucestershire, with a sung programme of Haydn and Mozart with wonderful soloists soprano Anna Devin, and baritone Gyula Orendt who was the Count in Le nozze di Figaro at Glyndebourne last year conducted by Jonathan; this opens for Festival Friends’ booking in May and public booking in June.

31 December at 7PM at Wigmore Hall, in a programme of Blow, Vivaldi, Handel and Purcell with noted and fast rising young talent soprano Anna Lucia Richter, with us again after the Wigmore Hall 115th Anniversary gala concert in June last year; Friends’ booking is open.

7 January 2018 at 7:30PM at Milton Court, with outstanding and characterful baritone Christopher Purves, in a programme of Handel Arias, including some from his disc with us ‘Handel’s Finest Arias for Base Voice’ which was nominated for a 2013 Gramophone Award. Public booking is  open.

Upcoming Release: Couperin’s L’Apothéose de Lully & Leçons de ténèbres, with sopranos Katherine Watson and Anna Dennis

Arcangelo’s new disc of works by François Couperin, which we are very excited about, will be released on 28 April and is now available for pre-order. L’Apothéose de Lully was Couperin’s hommage to his great musical predecessor and depicts the elder composer’s elevation to Mount Parnassus (where he plays duets with the shade of Corelli and, with Apollo’s blessing, effects a reconciliation between the contrasting French and Italian styles of the day). The Leçons de ténèbres were written for performance in Holy Week and demand—and here receive from Katherine Watson and Anna Dennis—vocal artistry of the highest order.
You can hear short excerpts of the music by clicking on the album artwork above, and purchase the album via the links to iTunes and Hyperion’s website below:
Recent reviews
Our new disc of Johann Sebastian Bach cantatas with star counter tenor Iestyn Davies MBE, launched in December, was Gramophone Magazine Editor’s Choice, and The Sunday Times Album of the Week, reaching Number 1 in the specialist classical chart, and further receiving 5 star reviews from BBC Music Magazine and The Observer: “The dominant virtue in this fine collaboration between the outstanding Davies and Arcangelo lies in an unsentimental perspicacity, reassuring in its intelligence and deep sensitivity” (Professor Jonathan Freeman-Attwood, Gramophone Magazine, January 2017).

In January, we toured with keyboard virtuoso Kristian Bezuidenhout in a programme of J.S. Bach harpsichord concertos, at Wigmore Hall, at the Sociedad Filarmonica concert hall in Bilbao, and the Philharmonie in Essen. Bachtrack awarded this German concert 5 stars with the words: “With Kristian Bezuidenhout’s inimitable and pulsating flow, Arcangelo performed most enjoyable, refreshing chamber music played at its best”.

The realisation of our artistic plans is only made possible by the generosity of our supporters, whose loyalty we are most grateful for. We have exciting projects in mind for the future, which we look forward to telling you more about soon.
